meet the members of mourning

Bill Pope - Guitar

I began playing bass at the age of 14, after friends in high school started a band and were unable to find a bass player. My first serious band was Alter (1992–1993), in which we recorded a one-song live basement demo. I went on to play bass for Bloodthrone from 1996 to 2005, recording Storms of Apocalypse (2001) and Shield of Hate (2004), both released on Forever Underground Records.

After departing Bloodthrone, I co-founded Mourning with Mike Connors, continuing on bass and recording Blinded by Hate (2005) and Mourning the New Dawn (2011) through Ossuary Industries Records. In 2019, I transitioned from bass to guitar.

My musical influences include Amon Amarth, Between the Frost, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, and Marduk, among many others.

I was introduced to the metal scene at the age of 15. My previous band, Ominous, toured extensively throughout the United States and Puerto Rico for several years, performing alongside numerous national acts. During this time, I was signed to both Rotting Corpse Records and Born of Chaos Records.

While my list of influences is extensive, my primary influences include Suffocation, Deicide, Dying Fetus, Kataklysm, and Death.

Josh Hammond - Vocals/Guitar

I was a musician and metalhead from an early age, initially influenced by artists such as The Beatles and The Who. Over time, my tastes evolved toward heavier acts including early Metallica, Venom, Exodus, and Slayer, ultimately leading me into the world of death metal.

My primary guitar influences include Mike Scaccia (Rigor Mortis), Bill Steer (Carcass), and Tommy T. Baron (Coroner), with additional influences from Chuck Schuldiner, Mitch Harris, Rocky George, and Dave Navarro—the latter two particularly for their fluid and expressive lead guitar styles.

I am a founding member of New Jersey–based death metal band Casket, formed in 1994, and have also performed with other New Jersey acts including Sanguinary and Ominous.

Scott Gundlach - Bass

I have been immersed in music since the age of 10, developing proficiency across a wide range of instruments and musical styles. My primary instruments include bass, guitar, drums, mandolin, ukulele, and tuba, with additional experience on instruments such as flute and violin.

Prior to joining Mourning, I performed as a bassist for Casket alongside Josh (vocals) and previously served as the drummer for No Sign of a Struggle earlier in my career. My passion for sonic experimentation and versatility across multiple instruments contributes a distinctive and dynamic element to the band’s overall sound.
